Facing a team of locals with a sizeable youthful following, how would the Salmon fare? Your trusty reporter, enslaved by treacherous task masters in the heathen code mines of Bloomsbury – deep in the New Media industrial heartlands – arrived at the venue to a 3 – 1 score line in Salmon’s favour. This adequately reflected the comparative skill of the two teams’ players. Salmon were no match for them, never allowing them to have any more than a fraction of the possession, and making a number of shots on goal without any from the opposition. This was despite Oinn incongruously trying to back-heel a plum cross from the wing, allowing it to go wide. Two quick goals from ‘El Bandito’ followed shortly before the end of the first half. Professionalism, Consistency, Resolve. These are three qualities that, when faced with an impressive lead, Salmon will frequently fail to exude. And so it was in the second half. You may have heard this story somewhere before. Displaying an utter lack of ability in keeping hold of the ball, they allowed the opponents to take control of the game, striking four times in succession to draw level, with Salmon seemingly unable to do anything in reply. And these were not hard goals, mere gentle tap-ins that Salmon themselves would have been embarrassed to have scored. One Salisbury player got so excitied in the goal fest he actually had a seizure. Luckily he made a full recovery. But something had to be done to rectify the deficit, and a series of cyclical team changes allowed manager Lew to stem the flow. After a while, Salmon fought back and a sharp goal from XXX allowed the Boys in Blue and Black to nudge back in to the lead once more. A few more close shaves from both sides kept the game alive in the last few minutes, with either side sensing the possibility of clinching the game. However it was yet another miss-timed deflection for the jammy Oinn right at the whistle which sealed the victory and garnered the three points.
